Tin House Byward Market Courtyard

The largest of the Sussex Courts, the Tin House Court gets its name from an actual house façade hung on one of the limestone walls framing the courtyard.  Decorated with tin by its owner Honore Foisy, a tinsmith in the early 20th century, the Tin House was saved from demolition by the National Capital Commission.  It was restored in the early 1970’s and the façade was hung in the courtyard in 1973.  Today home to one of the areas favorite Byward Market Courtyard restaurants, The Black Thorn serves just about every crowd, from the university students to multi-ethnic groups.  A large round fountain sits in the center of this Byward Market courtyard, creating background noise to dull any sounds of traffic.  After almost thirty years, the Tin House Court remains an excellent place to enjoy a peaceful lunch, dinner or just a drink.  Whether you’re tuned in to the sound of the center fountain in the summer or warm and cozy next to our dining room fireplace in the winter, The Black Thorn is the perfect Byward Market Courtyard restaurant.
